For patients in Tonga, receiving hip or knee replacement surgery close to home is now a reality. A new documentary teaser offers a first look at the story behind this milestone at Vaiola Hospital, where a visiting New Zealand surgical team recently performed the country’s first joint replacements.

Previously, accessing these procedures meant travelling overseas, with the cost of surgery, travel and accommodation putting treatment beyond reach for many. Bringing joint replacement surgery to Tonga has taken years of preparation and the combined efforts of local hospital staff, visiting medical professionals and supporters.

RRT’s earlier NZ$120,000 contribution helped fund upgrades to three operating theatres and support the surgical project. These improvements helped prepare the hospital for procedures that could not previously be offered locally.

Since then, RRT has also provided a further NZ$25,000 towards upgrading the hospital’s orthopaedic trauma equipment. This equipment supports the treatment of complex fractures and gives local clinicians access to more suitable, up-to-date surgical tools.

The new trauma equipment was used during the recent surgical visit, with local surgical staff also shown how to use some of the new surgical kits.

During the visit, the team completed ten hip and knee replacements while working alongside Vaiola Hospital staff. For the patients and everyone involved, it marked an important step in a project three years in the making.

The documentary will share more of the people and work behind this progress. We are grateful to the visiting surgical team, the staff at Vaiola Hospital and everyone whose support has helped make this care possible.

Watch the teaser for a first look at the story, with more to come in the full documentary.

To Be Continued.
