RRT Supports The Federated Farmers Community Connect Event in Gisborne

In November 2024, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) partnered with Federated Farmers to host a heartwarming and practical Federated Farmers Community Connect (FCC) event in Gisborne. This event provided much-needed support for farmers still recovering from the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle nearly two years ago.
Cyclone Gabrielle’s catastrophic impact left a lasting mark on New Zealand’s farming community. Many farmers faced the enormous task of rebuilding essential infrastructure, such as fencing, to restore functionality to their farms. The FCC event in Gisborne was part of a broader initiative designed to alleviate some of this burden while fostering a sense of community among those affected.
At the event, over 240 farmers received essential fencing materials, including 5,300 fence posts and 34,500 battens, generously donated by the RRT. Federated Farmers also contributed an impressive $340,000 worth of fencing materials, providing farmers with tools to continue their recovery journeys. For many attendees, this support represented a vital lifeline, enabling them to rebuild their livelihoods.
Cameron Prestidge, RRT NZ’s Director, emphasized the importance of events like this in aiding recovery. “This initiative is designed to give farmers a helping hand as they continue to recover from one of the most devastating natural disasters New Zealand has experienced,” he said. “We’ve found FCC events are a great way to connect our farmers in need with their local communities to give them support and show them we care.”

Beyond the practical support, the event served as a platform for connection and camaraderie. Farmers were treated to RRT’s signature burgers, bacon and egg rolls, and barista-style coffee, served by a dedicated team of 58 RRT volunteers. These moments of shared meals and warm conversations created an environment where attendees could share experiences, offer encouragement, and rebuild emotional resilience.
Local support services were also present at the event, providing mental health resources, rural financial counseling, and veterinary advice. These services addressed the holistic needs of the farming community, acknowledging that recovery extends beyond physical repairs.
This Gisborne event marked the sixth FCC initiative supported by RRT in New Zealand. Over the past year, RRT has donated more than 1,300 fencing packs worth $1.9 million and served 3,330 meals at similar events in regions including Gisborne, Wairoa, and Waipukurau. These events reflect RRT’s unwavering commitment to standing alongside New Zealand’s farmers in times of need.

“This event is for [farmers] to hopefully provide a small boost to their efforts to rebuild their farms and get back on their feet.”
