Heart Kids shine at sports fest in Dunedin

It was wet, it was windy, but it was a Saturday not
to be missed for many excited children! 12th October 2019 marked the
calendar for the Heart Kids Otago Sports Fest, held at the Edgar Sports Centre
in Dunedin.
Heart Kids are a New Zealand only charity, helping
individuals and families cope with the day to day challenges of living with a
childhood heart condition. It is affecting to learn the 12 babies are
born every week with broken hearts.

Learning about this amazing charity struck a chord in our
hearts and RRT were delighted to provide catering support at the Otago Sports
Fest. This event allowed children to come along and try different sports. Rugby,
Basketball, Cricket, Hip Hop, Tennis, Athletics and much more. A bouncy castle
and face-painting also kept the children entertained.

After a lot of running and jumping, the little tummies soon needed a refill and of course a cool drink to boost them back into action for the afternoon.

Our passionate volunteers were busy preparing nutritious burgers for both children, parents are care givers who attended the event. 116 Burgers were served, with all proceeds of $430 handed directly to Heart Kids Otago.

It was so compelling to see these children, some with disabilities, participating in everyday activities that we so easily take for granted.

A note from the event organiser, Marlene Du Toit-Parks:
I just wanted to thank you and your amazing team of volunteers
for braving the cold and making such amazing burgers on Saturday in support of
our Heart Kids Sports Fest!
Your sponsorship and time spent has made us $430.50 towards our fundraising
efforts and everyone loved the burgers.
RRT Dunedin volunteers look forward to helping out again in
the near future.
