Run the Runway 2024: Running for a Cause at Prestwick Airport

Posted: November 4, 2024

On Saturday, November 2nd, at 8:00 AM, ‘Run the Runway 2024’ took place at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, where around 1,000 participants gathered to run or walk 5K or 10K laps along the runway. This special event, organised by Prestwick Airport in support of The Beatson, Doing It for Daniel, and Ayrshire Hospice, raised £140,000 in support of cancer patients and those with serious illnesses—a cause deeply meaningful for many involved, including those who have lost colleagues to cancer or support loved ones currently fighting it.

The ‘Beatson Cancer Charity’, ‘Doing It for Daniel’, and ‘Ayrshire Hospice’ are UK organisations supporting cancer patients and those with serious illnesses. The Beatson partners with the West of Scotland Cancer Centre to fund cancer treatments and patient care. ‘Doing It for Daniel’, created in memory of Daniel Caplan, raises awareness and funds to improve family cancer care, including a retreat home for families to have time and space for a relaxing break away. ‘Ayrshire Hospice’ offers compassionate, high-quality care and emotional support for patients and their loved ones in the community and their facility.

The Rapid Relief Team Glasgow participated by setting up their red tent and serving around 1,250 attendees with bacon rolls, hot drinks, and refreshments to keep them going. With check-in starting at 6:30 AM, the runway was closed for the morning to allow participants to complete their laps, marking a powerful morning of solidarity and fundraising for three vital charities. RRT received a cheque for £1,250, which added to the spirit of generosity and support for the cause. We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation.

The founders of Doing It for Daniel, Daniel’s mother and father, shared their story and heartfelt thanks, saying, “We are from the charity ‘Doing it for Daniel’, a children’s cancer charity; we support children diagnosed with any cancer in Glasgow and help to fund brain tumour research, brain cancer is the biggest killer in children and the biggest killer in adults under 40 and the least funded. Our son Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumour (DMG/DIPG); he is our hero and inspiration; we told him we would set up a charity in his name and help kids. This is why we find ourselves in amazing events like this one today. We just want to thank everyone at Prestwick airport who has put on this event to raise money for Ayrshire Hospice, Doing it for Daniel and Beatson Cancer Charity, and we want to thank the Rapid Relief Team, who have provided all the catering; thank you to all the people who have worked on this today, all the people that support RRT because what you do is incredible so thank you so much.”

RRT is proud to support such inspiring charities, joining in their mission to make a difference for those affected by cancer and standing alongside others dedicated to creating a brighter future for patients and their families.
