Community Spirit On the Trail As Charity Serves Walkers Crossing Wales In A Single Day
Hundreds of walkers crossed the width of Wales on Saturday as the Rotary Across Wales Walk (RAWW) 2026 brought together participants from across the UK for one of the country’s most ambitious single-day walking challenges.
Starting in Machynlleth and finishing at Montgomery on the English border, participants chose from five distance options ranging from 6 to 46 miles, following a route steeped in Welsh history, winding through Glyndŵr’s Way National Trail, the Montgomery Canal, and the communities of Staylittle, Trefeglwys, Caersws, Newtown, and Abermule. The event, organised by Rotary, raises funds to support the organisation’s charitable work.
Volunteers from charity the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) were based at Aberhafesp Community Centre at around midday, providing a welcome checkpoint for walkers making their way along the route. The team served 416 hot meals, a practical act of encouragement at the midpoint of the route for many participants.
A team of 12 RRT volunteers supported the event, with Matthew Lynes coordinating the deployment.
“Aberhafesp sits along this beautiful stretch of the route, and you could really feel the energy of the day as walkers came through. What they all had in common was a real sense of purpose and determination.“Serving a hot meal at that point in the day is a simple thing, but it matters. Our volunteers were grateful to be part of a well-loved event that brings communities together and celebrates the best of the Welsh countryside. We hope to see everyone back out on the route again next year.”Being at both Fareham and Weston-Super-Mare gave us the chance to show who we are and what we do, and to serve a warm meal to families enjoying the day. We were honoured to be part of events that shine a spotlight on our emergency services, and we look forward to continuing to support 999 Days across the country.”
