CANCER… a word once regarded as a death sentence. Now, due to the relentless quest for understanding and research into better treatments, better care and potential cures for cancer, the diagnosis of cancer is, although still frightening, not as severe and the prognosis is far better than it ever was.

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is one of the world’s leading cancer research, education and treatment centres globally and is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to caring for people affected by cancer. Peter Mac has over 2,500 staff, including more than 580 laboratory and clinical researchers, all focused on studying and understanding cancer and its treatments.

On Thursday December 7th, the Plymouth Brethren Rapid Relief Team (RRT) arrived at the VCCC, Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre to provide the annual Christmas lunch for all the Peter MacCallum staff. Up on Level 7 in the beautiful outdoor garden area the tables and BBQs were set up ready to start cooking the lunch.

The BBQs starting cooking and the delicious aroma of cooking hamburgers was soon wafting around the outside area. At 11:30am the first members of the staff started to come and choose their burger and desserts as the Rapid Relief Team starting serving lunch. It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone enjoyed the music provided by the Peter Mac choir singing Christmas carols as they feasted on the delicious lunch.

Over the next few hours the Rapid Relief Team served over 700 hamburgers to the staff and over 1500 desserts. The cafés at the VCCC kindly donated the dessert to show their appreciation of the effort and work done by all the staff at Peter Mac. The staff were impressed with the teamwork shown in the serving of the meals and the efficiency of the team.

The lunch break the staff enjoyed was well deserved because of their tireless, consistent efforts throughout the year. The work and dedication shown by the staff at Peter Mac is incredible and RRT regard it as a privilege to support this very worthy cause.
