On the 6th October, firefighters were called to tackle a huge blaze at a recycling centre in Liverpool. Emergency services were called to the fire in Foster Street, Kirkdale, shortly before 4am.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and found household waste inside the warehouse alight. In total, 10 fire engines attended the incident as well as two aerial appliances and a high-volume pump, while local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

Thanks to the hard work of the fire crews, by 09:00 the blaze was under control. RRT volunteers were at the scene to support the welfare of the Merseyside Fire and Rescue team with hot drinks and food.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire. However, there was one important rescue that night… One firefighter from Kirkdale’s Blue Watch, helped to save the life of a cat found badly burned at the incident. Smokie the cat was taken to PDSA in Huyton and is recovering well. You can read the full story of Smokie’s rescue on the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Facebook Page.
